Schrack Technik's fibre optic cables are universal cables that you can also buy pre-assembled (pre-assembled fibre optic cables). The Universal fibre optic cables can be used both indoors and outdoors and are equipped with a non-metallic rodent protection. Schrack Technik fibre optic cables are suitable for campus backbones or building backbones (trunking) as well as for horizontal cabling. Fibre optic cables also support all computer network applications, such as FDDI, Gigabit Ethernet or ATM. Our fibre optic cables are also suitable for laying directly in the ground and are easy to install in ducts, tunnels, and trenches. Fibre optic cables from Schrack Technik have a central loose tube and strain relief and a halogen-free FRNC/LSOH-3 sheath.
The actual glass fibre is made of high-purity quartz glass and is surrounded by a glass sheath, which is coated with a layer of plastic. This plastic coating makes the fibre optic cable flexible and robust, because without this protection the glass fibre would break when bent.
In EN 50173-1, optical fibres with quartz glass fibres are divided into categories (OM3, OM4, OM5, OS1a and OS2). The quartz glass fibres of optical fibres are divided into multimode (multiple modes) and single mode (single mode). In practice, the abbreviation MM is also used for multimode and EM or SM for singlemode. Multimode (MM) fibre optic categories, according to EN 50173-1, are OM3, OM4 and OM5 and are also referred to as graded index fibres with a core diameter of 50 μm. Multimode (MM) fibre optic categories, which can still be found in existing installations, are OM1 and OM2. However, these are a thing of the past and are only listed as informative in the standardisation. These obsolete categories are also known as graded index fibres, with a core diameter of 50 μm or 62.5 μm. Singlemode (EM/SM) optical fibre categories, according to EN 50173-1, are OS1a and OS2 and are also referred to as step index fibres with a core diameter of 9 μm. There is no technical difference between the fibre optic cable category OS1, which is also known in practice, and OS1a as specified in EN 50173-1.
ITU-T FIBRE QUALITIES
ITU-T standards, also known as ITU-T recommendations, describe the geometric properties and transmission characteristics of multimode (MM) and singlemode (EM/SM) fibre optic cables. Of the many ITU-T standards currently published, the most common - which are used in the LAN (Local Area Network) sector - are ITU-T G.651.1 for multimode fibre optic categories and ITU-T G.652.x and ITU-T G.657.x for singlemode fibre optic categories. Apart from the different transmission properties and their applications of the ITU-T standards, the fibres - especially single-mode fibres - differ primarily in their physical properties (bending radius). The term bend-resistant fibre has therefore become established on the market.
