Why are there different price classes of UPS although the power of their supplied load is the same? To cater to different market segments, different technologies with varying degrees of sophistication are used, which also offer different levels of protection. According to EN 62040-3, there are three design variants of UPSs:
A UPS of this class transfers the current directly from the input to the output during normal operation. In addition, the input supplies a rectifier which charges the batteries. If the mains supply fails, the output is switched to an inverter which is fed from the batteries. Depending on the model, switching takes place with a delay of up to 10 milliseconds (ms). In many cases, the output voltage in battery mode is rectangular or trapezoidal ("pseudosine"). For critical loads, interruptions of this duration are not desired. Typically, these types of UPS are therefore used in home applications.
UPSs of this category use a bidirectional inverter as the central component. It generates the DC voltage for charging the batteries from the AC voltage at the input or the AC voltage at the output from the DC voltage of the accumulators, as required. In mains operation, the output voltage is regulated and stabilised in the event of variations in the input voltage (AVR - Automatic Voltage Regulation). Therefore, it is no longer necessary in such cases to switch to battery operation. As a result, the charged batteries remain available for an emergency. There are versions with trapezoidal ("pseudosine" or "step-wave") and versions with sinewave output voltage. The interruption when switching from mains to battery is much shorter than with the VFD (off-line) type UPSs.
In an online UPS, the input is routed directly to a rectifier which charges the batteries. Their inverter feeds the load to the output at all times. In normal operation, i.e. when mains voltage is present at the UPS input, the inverter draws the necessary energy via the rectifier. In the event of a mains failure, it is supplied from the battery system.
Regardless of the quality of the input voltage, the AC voltage at the output is always generated from the DC voltage of the so-called DC link using a downstream inverter. This effectively creates a new network which is independent of the input. Disturbance variables, such as: harmonics, frequency variations and voltage failures on the input side do not affect the supplied load. The load is always supplied with sinusoidal output voltage and there is never an interruption in the voltage supply.

Superior protection
The automatic voltage regulator (AVR) provides protection from surges, overvoltages and undervoltages, without battery intervention. Reduced battery usage ensures that the battery set is 100% available for mains power supply failures and is able to provide greater autonomy. EMV filters provide additional protection from voltage surges and transients. When the mains power supply fails, the load is powered by the inverter and receives a perfectly sinusoidal supply.
