They are C-surge protectors (arresters) with test class II, T2, which are used to protect electrical units from transient overvoltages. These mostly come about as a result of atmospheric discharge or switching operations.

• these arresters should be fitted in proximity to where the energy connections are fed in, or close to the PAS/PE rail. They provide overvoltage protection for systems and units up to the standard maximum level of 2.5kV - and even much lower voltages with the SCHRACK PROTEC, COMBTEC and VARTEC arresters (approx. ≤1kV).
• lower continuous voltages such as 280V are not permitted

• these are B-arresters/arresters meeting test class I, T1 They have been conceived for “interior lightning protection”
• these arresters must be fitted near to where energy lines are fed in. They provide lightning current protection up to the standard maximum level of 4kV- and even much lower - with the
• SCHRACK PROTEC, COMBTEC and VARTEC arresters (approx. ≤1kV).

• there are 4 classes of protection used to classify a lightning-protection system (Class I offers the highest protection). It is one of the bases for selecting (dimensioning) a lightning-current arrester.

• When selecting and installing arrestors, the following Austrian standards are applicable: ÖVE/ÖNORM E 8001-1+A1 ( erection of electrical installations, especially Section 18) and ÖVE/ÖNORM E 8049-1 (lightning protection for structural plants, especially lightning current protection). These were legally brought into line within the Austrian Electrical Ordinance 2002 and- legally speaking- represent the current state of the art of technology and are the basis of all implementations. VDE directives (e.g. VDE 0185, etc.) are not permissible in Austria
